South America

South America is a continent of extraordinary diversity, offering travellers everything from ancient civilisations and colonial cities to tropical beaches, vast rainforests, dramatic mountains and some of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. The continent is made up of 12 sovereign countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela, along with French Guiana, an overseas department of France. Each country has its own distinctive culture, cuisine, landscapes and traditions, making South America an ideal destination for travellers seeking varied experiences.

South America’s history stretches back thousands of years, with sophisticated indigenous cultures flourishing long before European arrival. The Inca Empire dominated much of the Andes before Spanish conquest in the 16th century, while numerous other indigenous peoples developed their own societies across the continent. Spain and Portugal subsequently established vast colonial territories, followed by independence movements during the early 19th century led by figures such as Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín. The influence of indigenous, European and African peoples remains central to the music, food, festivals and cultural identity of South America today.

Geographically, South America is one of the world’s most varied continents. The Andes Mountains run along its western edge, including some of the highest peaks outside Asia, while the enormous Amazon Basin covers much of the north and contains the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Travellers can also experience the vast grasslands of the Pampas, the arid Atacama Desert, the wetlands of the Pantanal, the glaciers and mountains of Patagonia, and spectacular coastlines stretching from the Caribbean to the southern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This remarkable variety means that South America offers an enormous range of climates and landscapes within relatively short distances.

For travellers, South America provides an exceptional combination of adventure, culture, history and relaxation. Walk the ancient trails around Machu Picchu in Peru, explore the vibrant cities of Brazil and Colombia, discover the vineyards of Chile and Argentina, experience the salt flats of Bolivia or marvel at Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina. Whether your interests are wildlife, trekking, food and wine, history, beaches or simply experiencing different cultures, South America offers journeys that can be tailored to almost every style of traveller.

Brazil

Brazil is South America’s largest country and one of the world’s most diverse travel destinations, offering an extraordinary blend of vibrant cities, beautiful beaches, fascinating culture and spectacular natural landscapes. From the energy of Rio de Janeiro, with its iconic Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain and famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, to the colourful colonial streets of Salvador and the sophisticated atmosphere of São Paulo, Brazil offers something for every traveller. Music, dance, football and Carnival are deeply woven into Brazilian culture, while the country’s cuisine reflects its rich blend of Indigenous, Portuguese, African and immigrant influences.

Beyond its cities, Brazil is home to some of the world’s most remarkable natural environments. The vast Amazon rainforest covers much of the north, providing opportunities to explore the jungle and encounter an extraordinary variety of wildlife. In the south, the spectacular Iguazu Falls forms one of the world’s great natural attractions, while the Pantanal wetlands offer some of the best wildlife experiences in South America. Travellers can also discover tropical islands, remote beaches, dramatic mountains and extensive national parks, making Brazil an exceptional destination for nature lovers and adventurers.

Brazil’s history and cultural heritage add another dimension to any visit. Originally home to hundreds of Indigenous peoples, Brazil became a Portuguese colony following European exploration in the 16th century and was the largest destination for enslaved Africans in the Americas. These influences, together with later immigration from Europe, the Middle East and Asia, have created the remarkably diverse culture seen throughout the country today. Whether you’re exploring historic towns, enjoying Brazilian food and music, relaxing on a tropical beach or venturing into the Amazon, Brazil offers an unforgettable travel experience filled with colour, warmth and discovery.
